Rooted Botanics

Light Marigold Traditional Emroidered Huipil Crop

We recognize these Huipil pieces are a fundamental part of Latin American culture. We love working with these traditional styles because they originate from the same countries & regions that are home to so many dye plants that we have come to know so well. We feel that plant dyes are a way to bring these traditional garments new life with integrity, as long before the use of conventional dyes, plant dyes were used on these very same designs.

We understand the level of artisanal work and culture that is rooted within these designs. While we are not experts in their history, it is our intention to preserve these beautiful & intricate garments by bringing these damaged, tattered, & stained pieces new life through plant dye.

It is of utmost importance to us that we celebrate the traditional history of plant dyes & the cultures from which they originated. We are using traditional plant dye techniques as a way to bring new life to vintage pieces that would otherwise remain sitting in the a bottom of a warehouse, and eventually the landfill.

We look forward to continue learning about the history of plant dyes as it relates to Huipils directly and will be sharing education & resources about the history of plant dyes in Latin American culture.

Dyed with Marigold

If you're searching for a yellow as vibrant as a backyard bloom, look no further! Marigolds are one of the easiest dye plants to cultivate in your own backyard and offer the most satisfying yellow. In our garden, we're growing both bush marigold, French marigolds, and a Mexican marigold.

Condition:

Best Fit: small-medium

Chest: 21 1/4"

Waist: 15" flat/relaxed

Length: 16"

Care Instructions: Due to the nature of plant dyes, color may fade over time. In many cases, the fades and color shifts adds to the beauty and history of these garments. Please wash on cold with similar colors. For garments dyed with indigo, wash separately the first two wash cycles as indigo may bleed more than other plant dyes. Lay garments flat to dry, and do not lay in direct sun. PH neutral detergent is best, we recommend 7th generation as both a detergent and fabric softener.

All Rooted Botanics pieces are hand dyed, vintage, & pre-loved. As such, there may be some variation in color throughout, making each piece unique and beautiful in it's own way. Any major spotting or garment defects will be noted or photographed.
